Why wait for words when hands can talk? Signalong opens a gateway to early communication, allowing your child to express needs, thoughts and feelings long before they can verbalise them.
At Little Puffin Signing, We know how amazing signing can be for little ones. Babies can start to understand signs before they even begin to talk, and it’s pretty incredible that some can sign back as early as six months! We like to start showing babies signs at about three months, when they begin to really watch and learn from the grown-ups around them.
Signing is a big help in cutting down tears and grumps because it gives babies a way to tell you what they need or want without getting upset. It’s not a magic spell to stop all crying, but it sure helps a lot! Plus, learning signs can make picking up new words a whole lot easier. For example, if a baby sees the sign for ‘banana’, they start to figure out it’s not just a sound but something yummy to eat!
When you and your baby sign together, you get to look at each other more and share all sorts of expressions, which is great for feeling close. And guess what? Signing helps babies to start talking earlier and know more words as they grow up. It’s not just about chatting sooner; it’s about helping your brain get ready for learning all sorts of things in the future!

These sessions are designed for babies aged 0 – walking. As well as learning signs, there will be information about natural communication development specific to the littlest Pufflings! We offer three terms each year, consisting of nine sessions per term designed to help your child learn language skills effectively. Our sessions are held at the Cobo Community Centre on Tuesday afternoons and all day Thursdays. The cost for a term of nine sessions is £125 Terms run from January to March, April to June, and September to November. Booking typically opens about two months before the start of each term, with priority given to those currently attending sessions and those on our mailing list.
These sessions are designed for children who are on the move, generally over 12 months. Sensory activities are a big part of Little Puffins sessions, with lots of exciting things to explore linked with the topic of the week.

For my eldest son and now my youngest I can see before they start using their words they're understanding the signs that we're doing together. My favourite sign is to 'wait'. They both understood it really early on and it's been a really helpful tool. Steph has taught me more parenting tips than she knows and a lot of the ones like you see on YouTube very often and the ones I show my friends are the tips she's taught us to do with language development and the important things to look out for and what we say to our children. She's brilliant.

All parents and child classes take place at Cobo Community Centre. We use a cosy room upstairs in the centre which has beautiful views over the Guet. Sessions also take place in preschools and nurseries around the island – these are directly commissioned and funded by the preschool or nursery setting.
There are 3 terms each year, and these run in blocks of 9 sessions. Terms are January-March, April – June and September – November. We also do some one-off holiday sessions for Easter and Christmas!
We recommend booking the full term to help you build up your signing skills gradually over the term. We always start term by learning your baby’s name sign, and the signs often get more complex as we move through the term. Sessions are also small (maximum 9 children) so they do often book up!
We’ve had little ones as young as 2 weeks old starting sessions! The most important part is for the grown-ups to learn the signs to continue using outside of sessions. Your little one will start looking around and being a bit more awake from 3 months so they might engage more in sessions, but it’s never too early to start sessions!

Little Puffin Signing sessions are designed and run by Steph, a qualified speech and language therapist.
